On Tuesday 15 July, we were delighted to welcome Warinder Juss MP for Wolverhampton West, to the UK DRI at Imperial. Mr Juss was hosted by Centre Director Prof William Wisden and Centre Manager Dr Jennifer Podesta for a tour of our labs and to learn more about our research.

During the visit the UK DRI team showcased their groundbreaking science, including programmes to study vulnerability and genetic risk in the progression of Alzheimer’s disease. Mr Juss also met with Group Leader Dr Cynthia Sandor, who demonstrated her analysis of smart watch data which can detect signs of Parkinson’s disease up to six years before typical motor symptoms occur. UK DRI researchers discussed the transformative potential of early detection of neurodegenerative diseases.

Mr Juss also discussed the importance of STEM education in primary schools and the importance of diversity within scientific research.

It was inspiring to visit the UK DRI and see firsthand incredible research which could transform the lives of people who live with dementia.

Only by supporting the UK's life science research sector can we build a future of healthcare focused on prediction and prevention, enabled by some of the technological insights I saw on the day.

Prof William Wisden said:

"It was wonderful to welcome Warinder Juss to the UK DRI. Speaking with him was a great opportunity to share our valuable research with policymakers so that they can see the impact of investment. It was important to discuss progress we have made on diagnosis and treatment and how we are making sure that future diagnostics and treatments work for the whole population.

We look forward to continuing to work with Warinder on a future of prediction, prevention, and personalised intervention where healthy brain ageing for all is a reality."
